An emulsion combines two liquid phases that do not mix together. In this case it is oil and water. Because oil and water do not mix, we need an emulsifier.
Emulsifiers are attracted to oil and water. This attraction allows the oils and water to bind together so that it does not separate.
Types Of Emulsions:
O/W. The oil is poured int the water phase.
W/O. The water is poured into the oil phase.
Phases Of An Emulsion:
When making a lotion, face cream, or an emulsified body butter, there are usually three phases of an emulsion.
The oil phase is where you add your oil-based ingredients such as oils, butters, waxes, etc.
The water phase is where you add your water-soluble ingredients such as water and glycerin, etc.
The cool-down phase is where you add your heat sensitive ingredients such as a preservative, fragrance oil, etc.
What have I Learned?
Emulsions have three phases.
To create an emulsion of oil and water, you need an emulsifer.
There are two types of emulsions.
