Body Butter Ingredients

November 7, 2025 by Connie Leave a Comment

Body butters are moisturizing and nourishing to the skin and is especially great for dry skin. They are thick and creamy and will help hydrate the skin. Anhydrous body butters does not contain any water so they are usually in a jar rather than a lotion bottle.

Making this pumpkin body butter reminded me of my first body butter and how far I’ve come since that first recipe. Over time I have learned that there are different ingredients that can be used when making a body butter. It can be just butters and oils if that is your preference. But, there are so many ingredients to choose from that can be an addition to your body butter depending on your skin type.

This body butter star ingredient is pumpkin seed oil. This oil was chosen because I wanted a body butter that’s great for dry and mature skin. Pumpkin seed oil has essential fatty acids, hydrates the skin, and promotes elasticity. With the cold weather upon us, this is a great moisturizing body butter for your skin.

Some ingredients you might find in anhydrous body butters:

Butters. Shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, murumuru butter, illipe butter, kokum butter.

Oils.  Avocado oil, coconut oil, rosehip oil, sweet almond oil, pumpkin seed oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc.

Esters. Coco-caprylate. Esters have a light feel on the skin. They smooth and soften the skin.

Waxes. Yellow beeswax, candelilla wax, jojoba wax.

Essential oils.

Antioxidants.

Extracts.

Starch. Cornstarch, arrowroot powder, etc. Helps to reduce oiliness.

Experimenting with different ingredients helps to determine whether you want the body butter to absorb into the skin quickly, slowly, have a light feel, or a heavy skin feel.
