The idea I had in creating this soap was for it to have a purple color to go with the red color. One of the additives used for this soap is Alkanet root powder. I was hoping for a purple color to accent the lavender buds on top and the red clay, but instead I ended up with a brown color.
This is my first time experimenting with Alkanet root powder. Depending on the pH level of your soap, alkanet root can turn your soap into a color you had not intended.
Alkanet root is a flowering plant that has bright blue flowers and dark red roots. It is a member of the borage family. It is commonly used as a dying agent and has been used as a colorant in lipstick. It is skin safe.
It has astringent and antimicrobial properties and is an antioxidant that can help protect the body from free radicals.
It can be added directly to the soap batter or it can be infused into a carrier oil of your choice. I will experiment with alkanet root powder again to get the desired purple color.
